A sun or solar pillar develops when the sun is low in the horizon, either at sunrise or sunset. Light from the sun is reflected off of ice crystal in the clouds that are falling horizontally. This phenomenum is usually short-lived and this sunrise pillar lasted less than five minutes.

The heat has been extreme in central Texas for the past week. An upside to the 100+ degree days is that it provides conditions for the creation of awesome crepuscular sun rays in the early morning and late afternoon. This is a sunrise over a farm pond near my home.

The sunrises along the Texas coast are among the most beautiful I have ever seen. The abundant palm trees in the Rio Grande Valley provide a perfect foreground for yet another awesome sunrise near the Lower Laguna Madre in South Texas.

The early morning birds were enjoying this magnificent sunrise as much as I was. I wasn’t sure if I was looking at the sun or the planet Mars!

Storm clouds were racing by partially obscuring a beautiful burnt orange sunrise.

As I stood on our back deck watching, the dark morning clouds opened up into a perfect rectangle and the previously blocked sunlight spilled out into view. Awesome sight.
Melting Sun

The sun appears to be melting into the surrounding clouds, similar to a stick of real butter melting on a hot skillet.

When you have a sunrise like this, I think it is better just to look and not say anything at all.
